About Our Location and Community
Quick Lane at NorthStar Ford is located at 1420 Miller Trunk Highway, Duluth MN 55811 next to Miller Hill Mall on the corner of Trinity Road. We serve the Duluth, Duluth Heights, Lincoln Park, Chester Park and Hermantown communities.
Duluth is a port city located on the Southwestern shore of Lake Superior. Founded in 1856, however Duluth was not incorporated into a city until 1878. The city was named for the first recognized European explorer Frenchman Daniel Greysolon, better known as Sieur di Lhut. He first came to the area in 1679 to set up fur trade routes.
Duluth was originally inhabited over 500 years ago by the Ojibwe tribe, sometimes called Chippewa. They acted as middlemen between French fur traders and other Native peoples. In 1745 they were able to trade for guns from the British and use them to force other tribes out of the area. This allowed them remain the dominate tribe in the area and push all other tribes further South from Lake Superior. Over a number of treaties signed between 1826 and 1854, the mineral rights and land were ceded from the Ojibwe tribe and the tribe was forced to resettle on the Fond du Lac and Grand Portage Reservations.
Duluth has the distinction of being the farthest inlet port accessible to oceangoing ships. The ships travel over 2300 miles of waterway through the Great Lakes Waterway and St. Lawrence Seaway. Duluth is the also the largest and busiest port on Lake Superior. At one time, Duluth had more annual tonnage than New York City, making it the busiest port in North America in the 19th century. It is the biggest and busiest port on Lake Superior and one of the Top 20 busiest ports in the entire US still today.
Duluth has many buildings and districts for history and architectural buffs alike. A large portion of the downtown buildings are listed on the National Historic Register District. The buildings represent the architectural styles from Duluth’s period of significance (1872-1929).
Fitger’s Brewery is on the National Register of Historical Places. After 115 years of continual operation and the distinction of Duluth’s oldest business, the brewery closed for good in 1972. In 1984, the complex re-opened with several restaurants, a craft brewery, hotel, shops and a museum.
The Aerial Lift Bridge spans the Duluth Ship Canal to connect to Minnesota Point. The original design was a gondola like transport that swung across the bridge from one side to the other in about a minute. The design was changed to an aerial lift bridge in 1930, that lifts the span section to allow ships to pass underneath. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
The three-mile climate-controlled Skywalk allows tourists and locals alike to navigate from the downtown area to Canal Park safely over Interstate 35.
Duluth is the host to many annual events to tap into the outdoors and cultural roots of the city. There is the Homegrown Musical Festival, Bentleyville Tour of Lights, The Duluth Air Show, The City of Duluth Fourth Fest, Bayfront Blues Festival and Duluth Oktoberfest to name a few. You can find more at the official Duluth convention and visitor bureau here.
